was born in Jamaica and began studying the violin at eight.
He had made such rapid progress that he was awarded the Performer's
Diploma LRSM at 16, while still a schoolboy at Kingston College.
The following year he gained the LTCL Performer's Diploma and won
scholarships to study abroad, firstly at the Royal Academy of Music, London
where he obtained the LRAM Teacher's Diploma, and then an intensive three year course with the great Russian pedagogue Sascha Lasserson. Lasserson was himself a pupil of the legendary Leopold Auer the teacher of Heifetz, Milstein, Elman and
other great violinists.
Edmund Reid has held top positions in UK orchestras including Co-Leader English National Opera, Co-Leader Welsh National Opera, Principal at Royal Opera House as well as performing with the LSO and LPO Orchestras.
He has worked with the world's greatest conductors including Sir Georg Solti (who offered him a position at the Royal Opera House), Sir Colin Davis, Leonard Bernstein. He also led many performances and recordings for Sir Charles Mackerras while he was Musical Director at English National Opera.
Because of his distinguished orchestral career and his wide experience as a teacher, Edmund Reid was invited to be Leader/Coach of the Rehearsal Orchestra, London a training orchestra for young professionals.
As a soloist, Edmund Reid has performed recitals at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Wigmore Hall as well as international tours.
As a teacher, he has given masterclasses as far afield as India where he adjudicated at the first All-India violin competition.
His UK pupils have consistently received Distinction marks in all Grades and many have taken their places in Orchestras.
